The compiler of the edition is L.L. Pirogova, the head of the Lacuquer Miniature Department and the curator of the collection, an Honoured Culture Worker of the Russian Federation, a leading specialist in lacquer miniatures, the author of many monographs and articles, the curator of large-scale exhibitions in Russia and worldwide.
The book presents the history of the origin of lacquer art in the East, Europe and Russia, the colorful, rich and complex history of the four Russian centers of lacquer miniatures - Fedoskino, Palekh, Mstyora and Kholui, the secrets of technology of manufacture and painting, the variety of styles and forms, the symbolic and semantic richness of subjects and images, as well as the biographies of more than 1000 artists. But most importantly, the book features masterpieces from the collections of Russian museums and private collections (more than 500 items). These are mainly items from the collection of the All-Russian Decorative Art Museum, but there are also works from the collections of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, the State Museum of Oriental Art, the State Museum of Palekh Art, the State Museum of Kholuya Art, the Mstyor Art Museum and private collections. Many items are published for the first time.
