FROM FABRIC TO SPACE. AVANT-GARDISTS OF DESIGN

19 december – 29 march

In September 2025 the All-Russian Decorative Art Museum will present a new multi-genre exhibition project ‘From Fabric to Space. Avant-garde Women of Design.’ The exhibition reveals the outstanding contribution of women-designers to the cardinal transformation of Russia's visual culture, which laid the foundation for the system of domestic art education and decorative and applied arts.

For the first time on such a scale the public will be able to see not only some unique iconic works of outstanding women designers, but also to fully appreciate their creative role in the development of Russian culture and education. Without a doubt, these women must be categorised as change leaders and pioneers whose breakthrough ideas continue to shape contemporary practice in art, design and the creative industries.

For the first time, the exhibition will bring together in one exposition space more than 200 works by avant-garde women-designers - from the well-known names (Varvara Stepanova, Vera Mukhina, Lyubov Popova) to the little-known or completely forgotten ones. The project covers a significant historical period - from the end of the XIX century to the beginning of the XXI century, and will present works made of fabric, wood, glass, ceramics and innovative materials that were used in various spheres of life - from interior items to spaceship architecture.

The exhibition will also be complemented by the publication of a catalogue album for a wide audience and the creation of a short film.
