FROM KHOLMOGORSK TO CHUKOTKA. BONE-CARVING ART OF RUSSIA

26 october – 20 october

Bone carving is the oldest form of art. It has long been known to the indigenous peoples of Russia who lived in the North, in Eastern Siberia, on the coast of the Bering Strait - Eskimos, Chukchas, Nenets, Yakuts. Old Russian craftsmen also knew bone. Fossil mammoth tusks and walrus tusks served as the main material for carvers. On the programme we will travel to the most famous centres of artistic bone carving - from the village of Lomonosovo in Kholmogorsky district of Arkhangelsk region to the village of Uelen in Chukotka. We will see how Kholmogorsk craftsmen turn bone into the finest lace, and Yakut and Chukotka bone carvers tell fascinating stories about local northern life, animals, ancient myths and rituals in their sculptures and engravings. After the expedition in the exhibition halls, each participant will create their own artwork project based on the museum specimens.
