FROM KHOKHLOMA TO GREAT USTYUG. ARTISTIC WOOD CARVING AND PAINTING

26 october – 20 october

Wood is one of the main materials for folk culture and perhaps the most common symbol in traditional art - the tree of life, paradise, the centre of the universe. In the traditional world almost everything was made of wood - from the house itself to children's toys, tools and utensils. And even now wood remains a favourite material for artists and designers, as many of them take ideas for their works from folk art of the past centuries. During the programme-trip participants will get acquainted with the famous centres of artistic wood carving and painting - Khokhloma and Gorodets painting, Untsukul woodcutting, Shemogod birch bark, Bogorod and Semyonov toys. The best samples from the museum's collection will allow us to see how the twentieth century craftsmen preserved old craft traditions and not afraid to experiment, to keep up with the new times. This is what makes folk art alive and inspiring! After the "expedition" within the halls of the museum each participant will have an opportunity to develop his/her own project of a craft product.
