What is a bylina? Why is the Russian North called the Iceland of Russian epic? Who are the bogatyrs, how did they live and feast, what feats did they perform, and is there a real historical prototype for Ilya Muromets?
Together with Nikita Petrov we will talk about the types of Russian bogatyrs in traditional folklore and in modern media.
Russian bylinas are works of oral folk art, in which the pathos of statehood is expressed through the image of the hero. Throughout the 20th century, the Russian epic was repeatedly reproduced in all kinds of media forms: books for children, films and cartoons, in which the architypical bogatyr was transformed into the image of a modern superhero in a new cultural context. We can observe a new reading of the bogatyr story today.
