LECTURE-EXCURSION TO THE MUSEUM FUNDS

13 may – 31 december

Our museum stores more than 250 thousand items – samples of history of decorative and applied arts in Russia. Only a small percentage of the collection can be seen at exhibitions and expositions, the rest of the treasures are safely hidden in the funds, where visitors are usually not allowed to temper, but you have a rare opportunity to see what is hidden in the funds!

We are launching a unique lecture-excursion, which will be conducted by Andrey Shapovalov, Deputy Director for Science, Candidate of Historical Sciences. Participants will visit the fund of carved bone, where a collection of rarities made of mammoth tusk, walrus tusk, horn and bone is kept. They will see outstanding works of carvers of all five main Russian bone crafts of the XIХ- XX centuries, and also learn how Tobolsk bone carvers differ from Chukchi ones, and what Yakut masters learnt from Kholmogorsk masters.

During the excursion the visitors will get acquainted with the general storage system of the museum. They will learn what ship (barque) carving is and will find out - on the example of an extensive collection of gable boards – why it names the turn of XIX-XX centuries Nizhny Novgorod province house carving. You will also see the collection of wooden toys by V.N. Zaznobin (1900 - 1981), a master who continues the folk carving traditions in an original manner.
