CELEBRATING BIRTHDAY AT THE OSTERMAN HOUSE

01 january – 31 december

The “Birthday at the Osterman House” program is a unique opportunity to arrange a special celebration for a special person and their guests. It includes a guided tour of your choice, games, elements of masquerade, and an old-style tea party. The program consists of three parts: an excursion with interactive games, a tea party in the tea room, and a workshop. The specific program will vary, depending on the “style” that you choose for your celebration.

/ Birthday theme: “Folk art of the XIX and XX centuries

In the folk art rooms, the B-day guests will get acquainted with Russian hospitality customs, see traditional festive clothes, and find out what gifts were conventional in the XIX century. After the tour, we will play a folk game, which used to be a must at every holiday celebration in olden times. When it is time for the second part of the program, the guests will be invited to the tea room, where a fully set table with a samovar will be awaiting them. During the next phase of the party, the guests will visit the workshop. Recalling the ornaments and the bird and animal images they have seen in the genuine folk art pieces, the guests will be able to paint a wooden spoon, which they will keep as a souvenir. At the end of the class, each of the guests will leave their wish or drawing on a special charter; a real wax seal will be affixed to this “document,” which will be solemnly presented to the hero of the occasion as a memento of their birthday celebration at the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts.

/ Birthday theme: “At Osterman’s Palace”

The hero of the occasion and his/her guests will get acquainted with the festivity culture of urban manor houses. Surrounded by authentic articles that used to adorn interiors of palatial rooms, it is easy to picture yourself as an attendee of a real ball. Amidst a museum display, the children will make “insignias” and “fans” with their own hands, and will play a game in which they will get an idea of celebratory guest entertainment customs, will learn what things could be presented as a gift and what articles could be used to decorate a festive table. A holiday is unimaginable without some refreshments, so during the second phase of the program, the guests will move to the tea room, where, sitting around a table, they will be able to say a few heartfelt compliments to the host and drink a cup of aromatic tea. The entertainer will tell the guests about the history of tea culture, and will show them a few items related to this drink. The third part of the celebration will be pantomime. Our party will turn into an exciting and funny game that will see the guests display their acting talents and riddle-solving skills. Games of this type were quite popular as entertainment in the XVIII and XIX centuries. At the end of the party, each of the guests will leave their wish or drawing on a special charter; a real wax seal will be affixed to this “document,” which will be solemnly presented to the hero of the occasion as a memento of their birthday celebration at the All-Russian Decorative Art Museum.
