AUTHOR'S TOUR "MOSCOW IN PARIS. WORLD EXHIBITION OF 1900"

26 april / 16:00

You have a rare opportunity to travelling together with the scientific secretary of our museum to the ‘Russian village’ of the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris!

Here are just a few facts that you will learn on the tour:

/ The central pavilion of the Russian Empire at the 1900 World Exhibition was the Pavilion of the Russian Suburbs, built to the design of Robert Melzer, repeating the architecture of the Moscow and Kazan Kremlins. It was here that the department of handicrafts of Russia, which the French dubbed as “The Russian Village (Village russe), was located.

/ The building of the Crafts Department was built in Moscow, transported by sea to Paris and assembled there. Virtually all of the works on display in the Crafts Department, with the exception of museum pieces, were sold during the exhibition. However, many of the specimens were so interesting that they continued to be made in different versions for several more years.

/ Most of these items ended up in the collection of the Artisanal Museum of the Moscow Zemstvo, which is now kept in the funds of the All-Russian Decorative Art Museum in Moscow. Rare photographs from the museum's collections will allow you to feel the atmosphere of that time and see the people who made the Russian pavilion so memorable.
