The All-Russian Decorative Art Museum draws the results of the large-scale project ‘Designed and Made in Russia’ and opens an exhibition of object design based on the results of the IV Biennale competition. ‘Designed and Made in Russia’ is an entire ecosystem consisting of a competition, exhibitions, business programme, presentations, meetings, which has united more than 1500 professionals.
This year, 940 applications from 75 Russian cities were submitted for the competition. The Expert Council selected 426 items, and a jury of Russian and international specialists determined the winners, who will be announced at the opening ceremony. Traditionally, the Decorative Art Museum will purchase the Grand Prix-winning work for the first state museum fund of object design in Russia.
Elena Titova, Director of the All-Russian Decorative Art Museum: ‘Since opening a new line of business in 2017, our museum has been working to create a platform with a high level of expertise in the field of object design. An impressive combination of aesthetics and functionality of the object is one of the selection criteria. Another is the object's inherent ability to predict a technological, sustainable future. The house of the future is a helper, a beautiful friend, harmonised with the environment and human life, just like the traditional house of the past. Here lies the continuity and the museum's special view of innovation and tradition’.
At the exhibition you will see the best examples of Russian design for the last three years, much of it is exhibited for the first time. Furniture, lamps, decor, textiles, interior toys and jewellery made of traditional and experimental materials. The works of contemporary designers will showcase an impressive range of interior solutions, working with the country's artistic and craft heritage. This is the result of selection in three main categories - Industrial Design, Studio Design, Special Youth Nomination, and three new categories - Circular Design, Jewellery Design and AI-technology in Design.
The curators of the nominations are experts in the field of object design, jewellery design and AI-technologies: Vera Savelyeva, Alexandra Sankova, Maria Stepanova, Lilia Makarova, Dina Nasyrova and Andrey Kuznetsov. The project is curated by Anastasia Krylova, Head of the Fashion and Design Centre of the All-Russian Decorative Art Museum.
Winners in the main categories will be able to organise a solo pop-up exhibition in 2025 at the museum.
This year's innovation is the special project ‘Commonwealth Design’ and the exhibition will feature the works of designers from the CIS countries.
This year's general partner of the Biennale is NaftaGaz Group of Companies. The company will determine its winner from the short-list and award a special prize of 100,000 roubles, as well as select the authors to design corporate gifts in 2025.
Tural Kerimov, member of the Board of Trustees of the VMDI, Chairman of the Board of Directors of NaftaGaz Group of Companies: ‘Every year we see how the skill of the Contest participants and their understanding of design and its tasks besides aesthetics grows: ergonomics and economics. A thing should be convenient and, preferably, accessible to its consumer. The exhibition will present works that can change the domestic world around us in many directions’.
Special prizes are planned for the nominees from the International Exhibition of Furniture and Interactive Solutions ARTDOM, the Centre for Art Production ‘Vaults’, design galleries ‘Roommate’, ‘3L Store’, ‘Palaty’, the charity fund ‘Second Breath’, the research institute of artificial intelligence AIRI and the Centre for Development of National Culture and Crafts ‘POLE’.
